Ruby Tuesday

Maryt/The Teach over at Work of the Poet has something called Ruby Tuesday which featuring all things red.

Some sort of blurry pictures today, but I was excited because for the first time ever in my 61 years, I saw scarlet tanagers. The little stinkers stayed high in the trees at the far end of the yard so my pictures aren't very good, but they are such beautiful birds. I love cardinals, but I think tanagers make them look positively drab by comparison. The other bird here is a flicker, I think. He has a tiny patch of red on his head. I've seen a bunch of birds lately taking what seem to be dust baths. This little guy stayed there for quite a while. The other picture was a little red tree trying to grow up through the wood on my back deck.

I will probably be late getting around to people today. The remaining half of the big lightning struck pine tree in my back yard is scheduled for felling today. I'm probably going to be watching and taking pictures and chewing my nails most of the day. I will do my best to visit everyone, though.

Gorgeous birds! I don't think I've ever seen a tanager before now. I'll be on the look out for them now. We get tons of cardinals [here in PA] - a bird I had never seen living out west [Pacific Northwest].

Terrific shots! Thanks for sharing.

Oh good. The non-George Bush posts I can comment on! Ha ha. Great shots. I feel your excitement when you get to shoot something you've wanted for a long time. I'm still not satisfied with my hummingbird shots so I'm gonna keep trying.

That blurry second photo with that leaf caught my eye. It has something randomly wonderful.

I must agree with mimi lenox about those small splashes of red - they really add some interest to all the green!

You may have had to wait 61 years to see them, but it looks like it was worth the wait. ;-}

Happy Ruby Tuesday.

Great bird photos. Whenever I try to capture a bird in my backyard, I get mostly a silhouette, far away. Here I can see the bird! What a lovely shade of red.

Beautiful scarlet tangers, and what a treat to see them! When I lived on Long Island, I had lots of feeders, and one afternoon late, I saw a couple of birds with pinkish-red on their chests that I'd never seen before in my life. They turned out to be rosy-breasted grosbeaks, and you don't see them often because they really prefer the canopy to anything close to the ground. I felt so honored when they came to visit.

I never a Scarlet Tanger before, and it is a stunning scarlet. The cardinals aren't drab, only slightly subdued. But the Tanger positively screams 'Happy Ruby Tuesday"! That is RED...

What a pretty bird! Thank you for sharing it with us.

great captures of "those little stinkers" - they probably know they're beautiful and like to tease ;)

We don't have any birds as exotic as those. The nearest we have is a Robin Redbreast!

Hi Raven, I like your bird pictures. I do like to look at red birds, yellow birds, and blue birds. In general I am not a bird lover.
Happy RRTu! I too have mine up, in front for Wednesday is our new dog, Katrin (a poodle). Then RRTu has our older dog, Adi, who is perplexed by human behavior.

I've never seen one before Raven. Nice catch on the flicker too. He or she will be happy with all the displaced ants from all the tree work as they love carpenter ants..

The Scarlet Tanager is beautiful! It is not necessary to always have an upclose detail to have a beautiful photo. I have a tiny, far distant, photo of a Yellow-headed Blackbird and it is a treasure to me for it is the only one I have ever seen. Your Tanager is lovely.

I've also never seen a Scarlet Tanager. Thanks for sharing.

Dear Raven,
I admire your bird photos. They are rare. Shortsighted me never get to see the beauty of the little ones who're singing around our home most of the spring.
I had ten test in trying to catch a seagull, and was so proud when I finally succeed.
Sorry about your pine. Trees are mighty friends and hard to replace.
We've had a fight this spring against a neighbor who wants to cut our four spruce-firs.
So far they (the trees have not been touched, but we live in fear.
Lots of birds are nesting in the tall spruces, it will be sad to loose their company.
Good luck to you in finding a replacement for your pine.
