Ruby Tuesday; Charcoal on Red

Maryt/The Teach over at Work of the Poet has something called Ruby Tuesday which features red. I wasn't going to do Ruby Tuesday this week. So much blue, so many photos... and I'm not sure how much red I have in my little world, but I did take this picture last week, thinking about Ruby Tuesday and I'm thinking... what the heck....

This is a self-portrait by an artist friend I knew in New York City. I shared one of his paintings earlier in one of my Project Blue posts. He was (at the time I knew him anyway) truly a tortured soul, but oh, so talented. I have lost touch with him, but I hope he is still painting and doing well. His name is Don Madia.

Wow. A red canvas background....wonder what that means? Great portrait tho.

This artist surely painted himself tormented. Does artistic always equal tormented? It often seems that way.

I went back and read your Blue post on him. You traded reiki for art? Sounds like a wonderful arrangement. I only have one original painting, though I doubt it will ever be valuable to anyone but me, it was painted by my BIL!

Oh that spoke...truly a tortured soul. The red and black portrait came alive after you gave that description.

Great Ruby Tuesday post!

odat - I don't know. This photo doesn't really do the portrait justice. I love it despite how sad it is. Don himself was a little frightened of it.

willthink4wine - he was one of the most tortured people I ever met. It was nice to get the painting, this charcoal drawing and another painting that I gave to my niece as a wedding gift, but... His depression was so intense and consuming that it was devastating to work with him.

jennifer - he was so tortured... such a sweet and gifted man. I'm hoping that life is being kinder to him now. I've lost touch since my own life has been so full of upheaval for the past 6 (make that 25) years.

Oh Raven, I can see the pain in his eyes! Thanks for participating. I'm really glad you chose to do so this week! :D

It's a beautiful portrait in its dark way!

So Sad...his eyes tell it all. I hope and pray he is doing better all these years later. Thanks for sharing Raven.

I stumbled upon this post while doing a google search for Don Madia. I would be interested to know if you have any other photos of his art---Don is my great uncle and I am trying to learn more about his art since we have several of his wonderful paintings around the house. And, since you were wondering, according to my grandmother (his sister), he is doing well, though we haven't seen him in several years. He is still in Greenwich and we hope to visit him within the next few months. Thanks for this post!
