Daily Reminder # 283

This is one of Angel's toy watch locations and
that is her "when are you gonna throw it" face
I was going to do just gratitude this evening, but just before I started, I read today's What God Wants You to Know message from Neale Donald Walsh and it seemed like it was important to share it for a friend of mine who is in the process of "jumping in" (or maybe "jumping out"), so....

On this day of your life, dear friend,
 I believe God wants you to know...
...that there are no guarantees in life
...except that all
things happen for God's best reason.

If you need to know in advance
that everything will "work out"
before you jump in, you'll never
jump into anything.

Yet "jumping in" is life's
greatest excitement, its grandest
adventure. Don't deny yourself that.
Just go for it. Trust that Life will bring you
benefit no matter what happens.

You know exactly why you read this just now...

Love, Your Friend....

Daily Reminder # 282

For some reason I'm all disoriented this week about what day it is. It doesn't much matter given my life style - except that I have to remember to put the garbage out on Wednesday nights and get up earlier than usual on Thursdays. Still, I like to know what day it is and sometimes no matter what the signs and markers a day just doesn't feel like it's living up to it's nature. Today has felt like Sunday to me. No idea why. It just  has. Life and the human mind are peculiar sometimes. I watched the movie Social Network yesterday. It was a very well done movie but I'm not sure how I feel about it. I can't stand Facebook. It's one of those irrational biases that some of us carry in life. I know it serves a good purpose and in some ways I might like it if I let myself, but I think you can get swallowed up in a lot of silly stuff like poking and trivial nonsense that I don't really care about. So I avoid it. I'm a curmudgeon about it. Back before Shannon turned into a full-blown teenager and stopped visiting, she lived to go on Facebook. She has her own computer now so I imagine she still spends a lot of time there. I just don't get it. Don't get cell phones either. I mean I get the practical aspect of them, but I've had people visit me and then spend time talking on their cell phones because nobody can be out of touch with everybody they know any more. I'm extreme in the other direction, I guess. A hermit of sorts.

Thank you to Quilly, by the way who left a comment telling me I'm not as wicked as I think I am. Others have tried to persuade me of this without success, though I am much kinder about myself than I used to be. Thanks for trying, though.

I'm just rambly tonight. Have CNN on and they played a clip of Charlie Sheen being totally insane and incoherent and being encouraged by people who are using him. It's something I've never liked about our society - our obsession with celebrities, our willingness to worship them and then our willingness to turn on them and make entertainment out of their tragedies and break downs. Now I will stop rambling and just go to gratitude.

Anyway, I'm rambling mindlessly so I'll stop and just move on to gratitude.  Some things I'm grateful for today:  (Items in red are pre-gratitude, an effort to persuade the Universe that it must get cracking and grant my wishes quickly since I have said thank you so nicely.)

HAVE A WONDERFUL DAY!

Daily Reminder # 281

Desperate for something different to photograph and
I thought this shadow was kind of interesting.
Going to use Neale Donald Walsh tonight. I absolutely hate this one. I mean I hate it passionately. It applies to me on multiple levels and it stinks. Stinks, I tell you. I don't mind good, wise advice that I want to follow, but this stuff that's repulsively true and that I have no desire to listen to, well..... So read it if you want to. It applies to almost every aspect of my life. But I haven't left my house in five years. I can barely walk. I almost never see another human being.. Part of me really wants to give up my vices: staying up late and getting up late, wasting my day playing computer games, watching TV, over-eating... But another part of me - the one that's winning - thinks that my vices are my only friends. Anyway. I post it because I know it's important. But I do so with a chip on my shoulder and a hint of  "bah humbug (not actually the words I'm thinking) to Neale and God.

On this day of your life, dear friend,
I believe God wants you to know...
....that he who eats till he is sick must fast till he is well.

That is a Hebrew proverb, and it has to do with a lot
more than food. Look to see what behaviors you are
indulging in over and over again that are clearly not
serving you. Then, go on a "bad habit diet."

I mean it. I'm not kidding, Pick one bad habit, one
bad behavior, a day for five days. You can do this.
Stop doing the stuff you're doing that obviously
does not serve you--or others.

This friendly "nudge" came from your Self, you know...

Love, Your Friend....

Daily Reminder # 280

I've spent the evening listening to the 25th anniversary concert of Le Mis, a musical which is profoundly beautiful musically and has a message in tune with the events of the day.  I love it when things converge.

I couldn't find a good picture to post with this, but I can't see this poster
without seeing my niece Diana's face. She could have been the model for it.

We seem to be in a time of profound convergences here in the US and around the world. There is (hopefully) a grand shift in the status quo from a world that has been leaning in the direction of even democracy being taken over by a small faction of greedy men (and women, I guess) to a time when the rest of us are waking up from our slumbers. Whatever comes of them, I think the revolutions in Tunesia, Egypt, Lybia are wonderful. Oddly, I suspect - for all that the fear mongers out there trying to frighten us with the old boogie men - they are pretty much these revolutions are the last thing Al Quaeda wants. Their recruiting pool will not be filled by those who know they can stand as one against tyrany without blowing themselves up, who know that they are NOT, in fact, helpless.

I think something of that sense of solidarity, of realizing that we are not powerless has been awakened in Wisconsin. I'm going to post the video of the speech Michael Moore's gave there today. It's a rabble rouser... but it carries truth.

This is a little off topic, but another thing which has been troubling me greatly is the GOP's war on Planned Parenthood. This is supposedly a war on abortion, but it's really a war on the poor, as most of what the GOP does is a war on the poor. The irony about what they are doing with Planned Parenthood - Scott Brown has particularly rather gleefully pointed out that he is making sure there is no money for any Planned Parenthood programs, including making contraceptives and Prenatal Care. And of course the GOP in Congress has also defunded Planned Parenthood. It's interesting that they consider this a pro-life stance since the lack of prenatal care increases the risk of still births 5x and low birth-weight babies 3x.  I couldn't find statistics on miscarriages before 20 weeks (it becomes a still birth after 20 weeks).  These are wanted babies whose lives they are - in effect - helping to terminate. And that's what it comes to. Depriving poor women of prenatal care directly leads to the deaths of infants. Older, more developed, wanted fetuses. Or unborn, if  you want to use the Republican's own language. So their war on the poor is also a war on the unborn. And I repeat these are unborn whose parents want them. I wish I knew a way to pour this truth into the ears of the people who swallow every nonsensical word spewed by Fox News, who will picket to save unwanted fetuses but cheer at the news that Planned Parenthood is under fire, because I think if they actually understood the ramifications of that action (abortion is the least part of what Planned Parenthood does), they might not be so comfortable or so pleased. Surely, how can you champion undeveloped, unwanted unborn - while you participate in endangering the lives of those whose parents are eagerly anticipating their birth, or even those whose parents have chosen not to have an abortion.

There is something truly wicked and/or insane about some of the things that are coming out of the GOP. From redefining rape to classifying miscarriages as "homicides." This last has been proposed by a Republican lawmaker in Georgia  If that law passes (and I have no idea if it has any chance of doing so), then those who defund prenatal care would seem to me to be liable for prosecution. But I digress. Somehow, there must be a way to get people to connect to the reality that the lack of medical care for mothers is as lethal to fetuses as an abortion - and more cruel.

I'll finish with two more videos.  First a Martin Luther King Speech and then Pete Seeger singing that awesome song.

Weekly Wordzzle Challenge # 145

Another week has flown by and it's wordzzle time again. Wordzzles seems to be in a major players drought.  Anyone have any  ideas for how to drum up some enthusiasm?

Words for this week's 10-word challenge were: suicide, Cadillac, martial arts, signs of Spring, flounder, peanut butter, public library, the bachelor, fashion, wearing just a towel  And for the mini: it's a girl, spider web, coffee, slush, champing at the bit

My mega:

Wading through the slush of the the most recent snow-storm, "cup" (it was one of those insulated mega cups really) of coffee in hand, Frank Flounder longed for signs of Spring. He was champing at the bit for a change from dreary days working in lonely obscurity amid dust and spider webs in the basement archives of the public library. He had come to hate his job so much that it felt to him like living suicide.  Frank dreamed of better days, of fame and fortune. No more peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for him. He would leave this boring town behind him and with it memories of the town bullies calling him Francy Pansy (although he wasn't gay) and shouting "it's a girl" as he walked in school hallways. He had secretly learned martial arts and he was proud of his strength and his control. In his fantasies he became a famous male fashion model or - in his favorite - he starred on the Bachelor, drooled over by beautiful women. In one of his fantasy scenes his favorite (Mary Lucinda) encountered him wearing just a towel and swooned into his arms. Later at their lavish wedding, which was attended by the rich and famous, they drove off in their brand new Cadillac (gift of the show) to a romantic honeymoon in Tahiti. He was jolted back to reality by a snowball in his back and realized that he had arrived at the Library. He sighed and climbed the steps reminding himself that this was not forever. "The sun'll come out tomorrow...." he crooned to himself. He would show everyone. Tomorrow, he whispered to himself, WILL come.

My mini:

Andrew shook the slush if ice that was all that remained of his fourth glass of iced coffee and stood to pace back and forth across the waiting room yet again. After about 5 turns around the room, he sat again and began contemplating the intricate spider web in the corner by the ceiling, trying to calm his nerves as he waited for a nurse or someone to come in and announce "it's a girl" or "it's a boy."  He was champing at the bit for some news. He was about to become a grandfather for the first time. His own baby girl was soon to be a mother. He wished Martha could have been there. She had started dreaming of grandchildren almost the day Amanda was born. It was times like this when he missed her most but he thought he felt her presence today. Maybe she was here after all, he mused. And as he had this thought a smiling nurse came in to tell him: "You're a grandpa twice over. One boy and a little girl who was hiding herself from sight even with sonograms. Both babies are healthy and your daughter is doing great. You can go meet your grand kids if you'd like. Congratulations." He barely heard the last word. He was already half way down the hall. Grandpa! I'm a grandpa! Life is good.

My 10-word:

At the Signs of Spring dojo (it was what he assumed was a bad pun that had lured him in) Archie Cadillac floundered hopelessly in his effort to follow the moves the martial arts instructor was sharing with the rest of the class, feeling like each attempt he made was a form of social suicide from which he would never recover. He could feel the others snickering at him and it felt very much like the dreams in which he found himself at the public library wearing just a towel.  Or the one where he was a contestant on The Bachelor - or maybe it was some other show - and dropped a peanut butter sandwich onto the cleavage of some high fashion model. He shuddered at the very thought of it. But then he saw her - the most beautiful girl in the world - compassion written all over her face and he knew that he had found the love of his life. Nothing else could touch that feeling. He floated through the rest of the class like a master. And then he floated over to her side and his world was never the same again. On another plane of existence, his guardian angel with joy smiled at a job well done.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Word for next week's 10-word challenge: vacuum, visitors, vacation, vulture, vivacious, velocity, victory, value, virtue, vegetables
And for the mini: xylophone, xenophobia, xerox, x-ray,  x-factor
Thanks you for playing.  Newcomers can check here for some guidelines to make the game more fun. There are no rules, just some general guidelines and tricks.
Daily Reminder # 277
I so seldom get both girls together. Tara, as always, is hard to see.
She is a photographer's nightmare. She either blurs, moves or her
features get lost in the sunlight. Very frustrating.
Tonight's post is an testament to total self-absorption. My apologies for that., but ot was a big day here in Hancock. Delaware Opportunities came to visit. VERY early.
This was especially tough on Angel who is still seeming weary and traumatized. First off, I had to get up at 7:15 am, which, since I generally go to bed at 3:00 am is kind of like the middle of the night to Angel and Tara Grace and me. I set my alarm clock, something I never do since I can usually make myself wake up on time. But I didn't want to take any chances. So... I'm in the kitchen - remarkably energetic and wide awake - making coffee when the stupid clock (which I thought I had turned off) starts beeping. Angel is already totally stunned that I'm in the kitchen at 7 am dishing her breakfast. (Tara doesn't care.) Add this unrelenting weird beeping noise to it the already strange morning and... well... Angel's hanging low to the ground, waiting for an attack. Since walking isn't easy, I finish fixing coffee before I go deal with the annoying noise. Angel crouches, looking deeply upset.
Quiet restored, she relaxes a little, but is still troubled by my acting as though it's not the wrong time to be up. Then, as if all this isn't bad enough, a strange man comes and starts thumping around the house. Angel is very social and usually loves to check out the activities of visitors, but this guy had that "worker" energy and he had odd beepy things on his person which he waved around in the air. She started  looking for a place to hide and eventually (after contemplating something that freaked me out completely settled on a box I keep for the girls under the desk. She stayed there for the next hour or so as a huge machine was brought in and all (well not all, I'm still breathing) the air was pumped out of the house.
Is he gone yet? Is he?
Eventually - this dreadful intruder - sent from the weatherization branch of Delaware Opportunities to do an energy audit - packed up his machines and left. Apparently, my house isn't as well insulated as I thought, particularly in the crawl space where the furnace lives, so I'm losing a lot of heat that way.  Also, I learned that shutting the heat off in my spare room and closing the door does NOT save energy. Better to heat the whole house. I can feel the difference, actually. My furnace also needs work. He offered a new refrigerator, but they can't give refrigerators with a bottom freezer so I'm not sure I'm going to take them up on that. For someone who does almost everything sitting down, a bottom freezer is a God-send. The fridge my friends gave me is only 12 years old and has a 2 year old motor.  Anyway. This is on top of the other things Delaware Opportunities is going to do for me. I do think I'm watched over by angels sometimes.
Angel, however,  thinks I let monsters into her house. It has made for a very quiet day, though. Not a lot of naughtiness.  This is all probably interesting only to me.  The other blessing from today's events is lots of kitty pictures. Some good, some mediocre.. but lots.
Some things I'm grateful for today: (items in red are pre-gratitude, an attempt to inspire the Universe and my psyche to manifest good things. I need to work on patience, though. PCH gave my money to someone else. Sigh. On the other hand, I'm getting lots of free home improvements/help from Delaware Opportunities....  But I'd really like the new item on the red list. $25,000 from any source. That would be life changing.)
Going a bit political again tonight because I think this is important and Stephen Colbert managed to make it funny at the same time.
Thought this graphic describing the comparative benefits to the economy of the tax cuts for the wealthy vs. GOP's proposals for how to balance the budget. is worth sharing too.  It speaks for itself, I think, but you can go here to Americans for Progress to get an explanation of the content.
Daily Reminder # 274
I watched the Oscars last night, not something I usually do. At the very end, they had a bunch of 5th graders from Staten Island sing Somewhere Over the Rainbow. Best part of the evening. I was thinking of sharing it tonight both because I liked it and because it was relatively warm today but damp and gloomy and rich in icy rain. Ugh. Will winter never end?  But I digress.  It's just wonderful when you see kids inspired by a teacher who clearly adores them and finding joy in themselves and in singing. So here - along with my gratitude are a few songs by the 5th graders of PS22.  The first song was written by their teacher.
